Track of the Week: I Stand Alone by Theophilus London

Theophilus London. Perhaps you have seen the rapper/producer/style icon in commercials for Bing, or heard of him on NPR, or at SXSW, or read about him on numerous blogs, or some girl, who would eventually become your girlfriend, kept telling you to listen to him even though you kept telling her you simply are bored with hip-hop because most of the last decade has been terrible but she won't stop bothering you about it. Well I am here to tell you that the man is for real. Last Fall I had the great pleasure to see Theophilus London in concert in Seattle. I wrote about the trip to Seattle and the concert on my personal blog. One of the best songs he performed that night was "I Stand Alone," released as a single in 2011 and on the LP Timez Are Weird These Days.

Track of the Week: Orange Skies by Love

"Orange Skies" became one of my favorite songs over the past year. I love playing it myself on the guitar particularly. It was written by Bryan MacLean and is found on the Love album Da Capo from 1967. Love would probably be widely known as one of the greatest bands of the 1960s if not for Arthur Lee's refusal to tour and the bands eventual drug problems. Forever Changes generally is regarded as one of the best albums of the period, though not by the general public. And other than the last track, an overambitious song that runs on for much, much too long, Da Capo certainly deserves to be held nearly as high.
